At LED Controls, we know that the shift toward renewable energy isn’t just about cleaner power, it’s about smarter, safer, and more efficient electrical systems. One of the key components in solar Photovoltaic (PV) installations is the humble disconnector. And ABB disconnectors are a top choice among LED Controls customers.

What is a Disconnector?

A disconnector, sometimes called an isolator switch, is - as the name suggests - a device that separates part of an electrical circuit from its power source. Unlike a circuit breaker or RCD, which trip automatically when something goes wrong, a disconnector has to be operated manually. You pull the switch to break the circuit so that no current can flow, giving you total confidence that the equipment you’re working on is safe.

In solar PV systems, disconnectors are usually placed between the solar panels and the inverter. When switched to the OFF position, the internal contacts physically move apart, creating an air gap that prevents electricity from passing through. Because solar panels generate power whenever there’s sunlight, this “hard break” ensures that current can’t unintentionally feed into the inverter or downstream equipment while maintenance, inspection, or emergency response is underway.

Disconnector switches are designed for high visibility and reliability. The ON and OFF positions are clearly marked and mechanically linked to the handle, so the operator always knows whether the circuit is live or isolated. Features such as door interlocks (which prevent access to panels while the switch is ON) and padlockable handles (to secure the switch in the OFF position) add extra safety, especially on large or shared installations.

ABB’s range of switch-disconnectors combine durable construction with user-friendly design, smooth operation, clear indication, and proven compliance with international safety standards. For installers, operators, and maintenance teams, this means peace of mind: knowing that OFF means OFF.

Why Are Disconnectors Useful in Solar PV Systems?

Solar installations operate at increasingly high voltages — often between 800 and 1000 VAC. Higher voltages increase inverter power density, helping to save costs and space by up to 20%. But with higher power comes greater responsibility. Disconnectors provide peace of mind by ensuring circuits can be safely isolated when needed, protecting both equipment and people.

ABB disconnectors are tested to international standards (IEC 60947-3), ensuring they can handle demanding conditions in solar farms and large-scale energy projects. Easy installation and modular designs make them a practical choice for installers, too.

OTDC Series (16–1600 A DC)

The OTDC range is engineered for direct current environments like solar farms and energy storage systems.

  • Ultra-wide current support: From 16 A to 1600 A, covering diverse applications.
  • Exceptional breaking power: Rated for DC-PV2 utilization, capable of handling up to 100 kA short-circuit currents when paired with fuses.
  • Endurance: Up to 10,000 mechanical operation cycles, delivering long service life.
  • Thermal resilience: Operates reliably without derating at enclosure temperatures up to 75 °C.
  • Compact and efficient: Saves installation time (up to 50%) and reduces power losses by as much as 50%, thanks to smart modular design.
  • EcoSolutions™ certified: Highly recyclable (around 94%), zero-landfill manufacturing, and reduced lifecycle impact.

Together, the OTHV and OTDC ranges make ABB’s offering one of the most comprehensive for solar safety and performance, ensuring that projects of all sizes can be built to last.
