More than a programmable relay
The Finder 8A Series OPTA is designed to combine industrial switching, programmable control and communications within a single compact platform. OPTA is available with configurable digital or analogue inputs, relay outputs, Ethernet, RS-485, Modbus RTU, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It can also be programmed using Arduino-based tools and IEC 61131-3 environments.
Finder OPTA - Eccellente for Water Management
The Consorzio Acque Risorgive in Italy manages hydraulic protection and irrigation across approximately 100,000 hectares in the provinces of Padua, Venice and Treviso. As part of a smart water management project, Finder OPTA was integrated into a system used to monitor and control sluice gates within a natural oasis.
Three roles in one system
The installation used Finder OPTA within its EvoSCADA-IoT platform to perform three important functions:
- Act as a bridge between existing PLCs and the cloud platform, allowing established control equipment to become part of a connected automation system without needing a complete redesign. Communications supported include MQTT, HTTP, FTP, OPC UA, RS-485, Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU.
- Operate as an advanced programmable controller. Timing, regulation and control logic can be handled locally, while support for Arduino and IEC 61131-3 programming gives engineers flexibility in how applications are developed.
- Function as an IoT gateway and data concentrator, gathering information from sensors installed around the water network and transferring that data to the central EvoSCADA-IoT platform.
Remote monitoring and diagnostics
The connected system enables operators to monitor and adjust water levels remotely, helping the organisation respond more effectively to changing weather and environmental conditions. Bluetooth connectivity also supports local diagnostics, giving engineers another way to interact with equipment while working in the field. This combination of local control, remote monitoring and data collection shows how OPTA can bridge the gap between traditional automation equipment and modern IoT-based systems.
Applications beyond water management
The OPTA is great for liquid-based processes like pump control and tank level monitoring, but can also be used for HVAC systems, OEM machinery, remote plant, energy monitoring, building automation and Industrial IoT upgrades to existing equipment.
OPTA is particularly suited to applications where a conventional relay isn't going to be smart enough, but you don't want a massive PLC system taking up too much room in your panel.
